Sachsenwald, Friedrichsruh and Aumühle

A large forest to the east of Hamburg, Sachsenwald, attracts many friends of nature. These historical woods are also known for the village Friedrichsruh, where Prince Otto von Bismarck – the Iron Chancellor – lived and lies buried in a mausoleum. Two museums at Friedrichsruh display exhibits on the life and work of Bismarck.

The subtropical butterfly garden in Friedrichsruh is also highly recommended; in the nearby town Aumühle railway enthusiasts can visit a railway museum and admire restored locomotives.
